FINALLY CLEAN YOUR GROUT!

How to clean grout
1-2-3 Clean Your Grout!
#cleantok

The BEST Grout Cleaner

So are you ready to FINALLY get your tile floors and grout lines cleaned?  I have tried a few different products over the years, ranging from homemade mixes that I found on the internet to expensive grout cleaners.  All of them worked a little bit, but I always found something I didn't like about them.  Some were very expensive and you needed several bottles to complete one floor, some had a very strong odor, and others required a lot of time and scrubbing.  In the end, I always wound up only completing a small section of the floor before I got totally bored.  One day, while desperate to clean my shower and having nothing on hand I thought i try the only cleaner I had in the house; Clorox toilet bowl cleaner with bleach.  Too my surprise it worked quite well on the shower and gave it an instant cleaning.  I then started to think "well, what else can this stuff clean".  I immediately thought of the dirty grout lines on my tile floor in the kitchen.  I tested it on a small section and couldn't believe how fast and easy it cleaned the disgusting grout lines in my kitchen.
So I decided I would finally commit to cleaning the kitchen floor!

So began the 1-2-3 Grout Challenge!

1 product, less then 2 hrs and a total cost of under 3 dollars!!!

So gather your supplies and lets begin!

There really is no trick to doing this.  I simply took my Clorox cleaner (its a gel, so it poured perfectly into the grout lines) and started to pour the cleaner onto about a 3 foot by 3 foot section of tile floor.  I then let the gel cleaner sit on the grout lines for approximately 10 minutes.  I then took my hard plastic bristle brush and lightly scrubbed the cleaner into the grout lines.  I found that it really didn't take a lot of effort, the cleaner really did most of the work.  I then let the scrubbed in cleaner sit for approximately another 5 minutes.  Next I took a wet mop and cleaned up the cleaner.  I then moved onto the next section and repeated the above steps.  The only warning I would give is to say be very careful while walking on the floor until you mop up the solution.  The floor will be very slippery!  I was scared at first thinking that the floor was going to stay slippery, but once I mopped the whole floor when I was done and it dried the floor was perfectly fine.  The original color of my kitchen grout lines were a very light sanded gray.  I also did my bathroom tile which has bright white sanded grout lines (I wish I took before and after pics because the difference in there was unbelievable).  Sorry I do not have dark grout lines anywhere in my house, so I cannot tell you how the Clorox cleaner will work on those.

So that's really it.  One bottle of Clorox gel cleaner, one plastic hard bristle brush and a couple of hours and you will have professionally cleaned tile floor and grout lines!

Even though my kitchen floors get mopped every day, the grout lines were just disgusting.  This kitchen floor is about 15 years old and this is the first time I really cleaned the grout lines.  It's hard to believe looking at these pictures that the grout lines were that dirty.  It truly looked like a new kitchen floor when I was done!

Hope you take the 1-2-3 Challenge and finally have the clean kitchen or bathroom floors that you always dreamed of having!

GOOD LUCK!!!

  5. I hope this will work on my kitchen counters, they are in need a a deep scrubbing. Whoever thought that 3x3 tiles on a heavily utilized work surface was an idiot, just sayin'! That's a lot of yucky grout...

  6. I have tried quite a few different products recently specifically for cleaning grout and have had no luck. I finally took to Pinterest for some ideas. This worked great! I was skeptical at first since I had had so many fails. But, this did the trick. Thanks so much for posting!

  7. I tired toilet bowl cleaner on my grout and it worked like a charm. I had to apply it a few times to get the stain out. Just as a heads up: do not use toilet bowl cleaner on marble tiles. The acid will eat away the finish and it will look very dull.

    1. Thanks for sharing this! I have stone floors in my kitchen, dining room, and living room, and marble tile in my shower. I was ready to try this and would have cried if I'd messed up the tiles.

  8. Do you think this will work in the shower/tub?? I have a problem with the mold in the caulking around where the tile meets the tub.

    1. Thanks so much for your comment...Once I saw how great this stuff worked on my sanded grout I was excited to try it in the shower and on the caulking. While it does clean it slightly, it doesn't seem to do that great of a job on mold and caulking. If you do use it in the shower, let it sit just a little while and then scrub and rinse off. Basically I wouldn't recommend it for the shower. It will clean a little bit but nothing compared to how it cleans the sanded grout lines.

    2. I used this in my shower before I read these comments. My shower was the fiberglass kind with the solid walls around and the fiberglass tub. I wiped it over the entire shower and let it sit for about 20 minutes. It got the iron stains out that I couldn't get out scrubbing. My shower looked brand new.

    3. I know its like a year later, but a bleach pen works great on moldy caulk, just let the gel sit overnight. https://randomcreativity.wordpress.com/2011/03/13/flashback-cleaning-mold-stains-from-bathtub-caulk/

    5. Have a problem with the mold in the caulking around where the tile meets the tub? I mix equal parts white vinegar and peroxide put in a spray bottle use any time it starts to come back, NO scrubbing needed! Works in shower also.

  9. Your floor and grout look(ed) just like mine! I purposely got a pale gray grout and now it's black! I just happened to have this cleaner and can't wait to try it! Wonder if it'll work on the grout that was smoke- darkened by the house fire we had?

  10. I used soft scrub on mine and it works like a charm too.

  11. All I can say is thank you so much for posting this tip! I just did my kitchen floor and the toilet bowl cleaner really works great (I used Lysol brand with bleach). It's just like you said - leave it on for about 10 minutes and scrub with a hard scrub brush. Very little effort required for the scrubbing. I have tried so many different ways to clean the grout and none of them worked as well or was as easy as this!! I will be sure to spread the word! Also, another great cleaning tip I discovered recently is to use Scrubbing Bubbles type product (I use the store brand) for cleaning the baseboards. It works really well! So well in fact that I started cleaning other things with it with great success.

    1. On tile shower walls, clean well, do what works and for the rest of your life dry the walls with old all cotton towel. After the family showers DRY THE TILE WITH TOWEL now my grandmother cleaned shower 1964 at 64 shower was still sparkling at 97 1997. Just dry off hot water from tile and you will never scrub again.

  18. Now while the grout is clean, you should seal your grout. Grout is porous and should be sealed once a year to keep it from absorbing all the stuff of our homes. You can get grout sealer at any hardware store.

  19. Haha, thanks for the correction about bristle, I will correct it.

  20. Thanks everyone for all the great comments, I love reading them and getting your input and suggestions. Just to update my grout is still nice and clean. I would just like to remind everyone that in my opinion this stuff work the best on light colored SANDED grout. If you try the challenge yourself and write about it on your blog, please send me the link, I would be happy to include a link to your blog. Thanks again and Happy New Year!!!

  25. 2 Years ago I move to an apartment with dirty gross tile, I used cheap
stove degreaser from a discount store and a rechargeable Quickey
scrubber, I started with a tile scrubber from Homedepot, long handle
so you can do it standing up, but it was tiring, it's about 600ftsq
and i think they never been cleaned before.
Also grout has to be sealed after cleaning it, it's not my home so I didn't.
I think I will try the Clorox next time, thanks for the tip.

  38. Wow! This is fantastic. We moved several months ago and we now have 500 sq ft of tile that was absolutely disgusting. I tried everything to clean the grout nothing and nothing worked.
I can't believe how well this worked. A little time consuming but so easy.
My family is shocked at the difference.

  39. Yes! I am glad I am not the only one that uses toilet bowl cleaner to clean other things at home. I think if it can disinfect toilet bowl bacteria, it's the strongest cleaning product I have around. I use it to clean the tub and the sinks as well!

  42. I have colored grout on my tile floor. This worked wonders! My floor looks new again. Another post said they used lysol toilet cleaner with bleach.DO NOT USE THIS. I ran out of the chlorex and tried the lysol brand because thats all my store offered. HORRIBLE. Not only did it not work as well but there were so many suds it took BUCKETS of water to get the foam off the floor. It made the job so much time consuming. I went to another store to get the chlorox and now I'm back in business. Easy peasy. Then I used a grout sealer.

I just used the Clorox gel to do my counter and my dutch oven also (porcelain lined)...Im so happy with the results. My husband even told someone about the sink...its that amazing!

  46. This worked like a champ on my very grubby tiled kitchen countertops. Two suggestions: (1) Wear old clothes. By the time I was halfway through this project, I looked as though I was wearing the world's tackiest tie-dye tee shirt. (2) Wipe this off your surface with dry paper towels before attempting to mop your surface clean. Otherwise you'll be chasing bubbles this time next Tuesday.

I am going to stay on top of this little project once we get the grout sealed. Definitely going to have a towel for drying the shower walls from now on. MANY THANKS GIRLS! :-) I'll be passing this link onto my friends.

  50. My grout is a dark color. I thought it was dirty. Apparently it’s not or the Clorox cleaner didn’t work for me. It hasn’t been cleaned other than mopping in 14 years though. Maybe I mop better than I thought😂 It was a possible fail for me.

    ReplyDelete
  51. 0mg!!! This is too funny! Yeah, I’m not sure how it works on darker grout, my grout is a light gray in the kitchen and white in the bathroom. I have a feeling it doesn’t work as well on darker grout. Thanks for your comment! I love it!!!
